“Why is it that some people are selfish by nature and others have to be selfish just to survive?” Poor, complex, underappreciated Carson. At a mere seventeen years of age, this overachiever has a bright future that he meticulously planned for himself, but there was one huge thing he never saw coming! Meet Carson in the trailer here:
Brilliantly written by and starring out, proud and oh-so-adorable “Glee” star Chris Colfer, Struck by Lightning is a deliciously dark and sarcastically funny little gem which features an impressive and well-acted cast. The film is directed by Brian Dannelly (Saved!) and had it’s world premiere at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. While it initially grossed low numbers financially, that should change as it can now reach a broader audience who can view it through iTunes, On Demand, and the soon to be released DVD and BluRay.
Colfer shines as Carson, who doesn’t live in the present, but for the future that will someday get him away from his current small-town life and complicated family situation and into the big leagues. How he makes his way there is absolutely hilarious! Blackmail, photos and threatening to out fellow students? Yep, he goes there! Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect) also shines as Malerie, wonderfully complementing Carson as his polar opposite with her naïve way of looking at the world while documenting their last year of high school through a video camera. The movie also stars Allison Janney (Juno, “The West Wing”) as Carson’s “underprotective” and drama absorbed mother and Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) as his mundane, estranged father with a young, pregnant fiancée (Christina Hendricks of “Mad Men”). A touching performance by the great Polly Bergen as his Alzheimer’s-stricken grandmother rounds out this fine cast.
The moral of this story is to live today as if you were going to die tomorrow!
